Developing and Facilitating Leadership

The principal promotes the development of leadership capacity within the school community –- students, teachers and other staff, parents, school council for the overall benefit of the school community and education system.

Increasing Leadership Capacity

As a administrator, I feel that building trust and relationships is key.  I want staff, students, and parents to feel that their input is important.  I feel that I am approachable and that I would expect anything from others that I do not already expect of myself.

From my Leadership Practices Inventory:
I really like the way you approach issues and the way you try to solve them or help people solve their own issues.I also found very interesting the way you listen to people.

I really like the way you debrief with people who have an issue, all the strategies you use and how you support us constantly during good and rough days. I also like the positive attitude you show while doing your tasks.

I appreciate your willingness to support your staff and students. Any issues or concerns that we have brought forth to you, you have provided support and follow up. Your suggestions and guidance with regard to dealing with students is very clear, concise and thoughtful. You have a fresh approach to dealing with situations and it has been great.

Practicum Teachers

I have enjoyed working with a number of practicum teachers in my classroom.  I invite the practicum teachers assigned to other colleagues to step into my room and watch as well.  The opportunity to observe as many other teachers as possible helps teachers that are new to the profession clarify their own philosophy.

Maintaining an open dialogue with student teachers is an essential element in their development.  I strive to ask questions and get them thinking about their practice as opposed to telling them what I would do.  Allowing student teachers to try and fail is incredibly difficult to watch. I believe that trying, failing, reflecting, and correcting course with in the safe walls of an established classroom is crucial.
